It’s that time of year when we get to reflect on our lives and think about what we’re thankful for. Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) holders are especially thankful they get to enjoy the holidays from their very own home. Here’s a look at what else they’re thankful for.
Families who get vouchers aren’t just assigned a home. They have the power to choose where they want to live.
Families can rent their home for as long as they want. This gives them the time they need to get on their feet and move toward living without any assistance.
Through the voucher program, Housing Choice Voucher participants gain confidence as they learn how to be self-sufficient, paying up to 30 percent of their rent every month. Nearly 40 percent are wage earners!
By having their very own rental in a neighborhood of their choosing, Housing Choice Voucher participants get the chance to be active members of their community.
More than 50 thousand people are homeless annually in Maryland, made up of the elderly, disabled, poor, and veterans. There are about 3,000 homeless per night in Baltimore alone. The Housing Choice Voucher program gives many people hope that they won’t need to live on the streets anymore, that they can build their lives and become contributors to a thriving community.
This Thanksgiving, it’s important to remember that some people are thankful for many things that many of us take for granted.
